In the wake of what has happened and keeps happening, and to better educate myself on the systemic racism in the US (and all over the world), I decided to watch and read stuff on the matter. I first watched Netflix’s When They See Us, which I recommend, and then I started The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas. The story is told from the perspective of a black teenager who witnesses the death of her childhood friend at the hands of a policeman. I think the author has done a great job at showing how African-Americans might seem to lead a normal life like everybody else, but it’s actually not the truth. How Starr, still a teenager, has had to go through things that her white peers will probably never experience nor understand. Even in the smallest aspects of a seemingly simple life, it’s evident how it’s anything but that. I think this story is a great way to educate both young people and adults about what it means being a minority, to remind ourselves that Black Lives Matter is not just a trending hashtag. Black Lives Matter. Always.

Alla luce di ciò che è accaduto e continua ad accadere, e allo scopo di educare me stessa sul razzismo sistemico negli Stati Uniti (e nel mondo), ho deciso di guardare e leggere sull’argomento. Prima ho visto When They See Us di Netflix, che vi consiglio caldamente, e poi ho iniziato The Hate You Give di Angie Thomas. La storia è raccontata dalla prospettiva di un’adolescente afroamericana che assiste alla morte del suo amico per mano di un poliziotto. Penso che la scrittrice abbia fatto un ottimo lavoro nel mostrare come possa sembrare che gli Afroamericani abbiano una vita normale come tutti ma che in realtà non è così. Come Starr, una ragazzina, abbia dovuto vivere cose che i suoi coetanei bianchi probabilmente non vivranno nè capiranno mai. Anche nei più piccoli dettagli di una vita apparentemente normale, è evidente che le cose sono tutto fuorché normali. Penso che questa storia sia perfetta per educare non solo i giovani ma anche gli adulti su cosa voglia dire far parte di una minoranza, per ricordare a noi stessi che Black Lives Matter non è solo un hashtag in tendenza. Black Lives Matter. Sempre.
