Tess of the D’Urbervilles marks my first time reading Hardy and I must say, I liked it more than I thought I would. I particularly liked the author’s writing, lyrical and evocative, despite its being a bit too verbose, especially when describing nature and landscapes.
The story has made me feel a lot of not-so-positive feelings, from rage to frustration, from sadness to compassion. None of the characters is positive, not even Tess, victim of her own family, of men, of society, of herself and her choices. I couldn’t help feeling sorry for her, while I can’t say the same for the three men in her life — her father, her rapist and her husband — who were absolutely incapable to rise up to what they believed themselves to be, simply because they actually weren’t. Each of them is a toxic presence that ends up ruining her life.
Tess is the protagonist of an extremely dark story, her destiny set in stone from the very first pages. I found it very relevant, not only for the time in which it was written but also in this day and age, given the commentary on women’s condition and the unfair power men have over them.
Hardy’s novel leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth, and I believe it was at least partly his intent, that of making the reader feel a strong sense of injustice.
Despite the dark tone, the inevitable tragedy and the bleak feelings it conveys, I think it’s one of those classics worth a chance.
Tess dei D’Urberville è il primo lavoro di Hardy che leggo e devo dire che mi è piaciuto più di quanto mi aspettassi. In particolare, ho apprezzato lo stile dell’autore, ho trovato la sua scrittura lirica ed evocativa, sebbene sia un po’ prolissa, soprattutto nelle descrizioni della natura.
La storia ha suscitato in me molti sentimenti non esattamente positivi, dalla rabbia alla frustrazione, dalla tristezza alla pietà. Nessuno dei personaggi è positivo, nemmeno la stessa Tess, vittima della sua famiglia, degli uomini, della società dell’epoca, di sé stessa e delle proprie scelte. Ho sentito un sentimento di forte dispiacere nei suoi confronti, mentre non posso dire lo stesso dei tre uomini che hanno fatto parte della sua vita — il padre, il suo stupratore e il marito — i quali non sono assolutamente in grado di ergersi a quello che loro stessi pensavano di essere, semplicemente perché non lo sono affatto. Ognuno di loro è una presenza tossica che non fa altro che rovinarle la vita.
Tess è protagonista di una storia estremamente triste e il suo destino sembra inciso nella pietra fin dalle prime pagine, ma credo anche sia molto attuale per l’epoca e anche oggi, data la critica che permea il racconto sulla condizione femminile e l’ingiusto potere che gli uomini hanno sulle donne.
Il romanzo di Hardy lascia con l’amaro in bocca, e credo che almeno in parte l’intento dell’autore fosse proprio quello, di far provare al lettore questo senso di ingiustizia alla fine della lettura.
Nonostante il tono sempre più cupo, l’inevitabile tragedia che si consuma e i sentimenti ben poco positivi che questo libro è in grado di suscitare, credo che sia comunque un classico che valga la pena affrontare.
