Klara and the Sun is the first novel by Kazuo Ishiguro I’ve read and unfortunately I can only say it wasn’t the best first approach.
In this sci-fi novel, the author explores what it means to be human, if in the future it will be possible for AI to replace people entirely, if they will be able to copy what makes us people, what separates us from robots: the ability to love. The premise is not bad, despite being rather unoriginal, but the execution wasn’t convincing for me.
The writing is rather simple and flows well enough.
Klara is the least bad in a cast of flat characters who, together with the story, are not able to leave a strong impression or to provoke any particular reflection, as I hoped it would.
Klara’s naive view of the world is meant to make us feel tenderness towards her innocence, and the reader might sympathise with her to an extent, but in the end her character and the message the author wants to convey through her feel devoid of the substance and depth they were meant to carry.
In short, Klara and the Sun is a novel with a good idea behind it, but with a rather forgettable execution.

Klara e il Sole è il primo romanzo di Kazuo Ishiguro che leggo, e devo purtroppo constatare che come primo approccio non è andato bene.
In questo romanzo di fantascienza l’autore esplora cosa significa essere umani, se in futuro sarà davvero possibile per le intelligenze artificiali prendere il posto delle persone, se riescano ad imitare anche quella parte che ci rende intrinsecamente umani, che ci contraddistingue dalle macchine: la capacità di amare.
La premessa non è male, anche se ben poco originale, ma l’esecuzione non mi ha convinta.
La scrittura è semplice e scorre abbastanza bene.
Klara è la meno peggio in un cast di personaggi piatti che, insieme alla storia, non riescono a lasciare una impressione forte o a provocare riflessioni particolari, come invece speravo.
La visione ingenua che Klara ha del mondo vuole suscitare tenerezza nei confronti della sua innocenza, e il lettore può anche simpatizzare con lei, almeno fino a un certo punto, ma alla fine sia il suo personaggio, sia il messaggio che l’autore vuole trasmettere attraverso di lei sembrano mancare della sostanza e della profondità che avrebbero dovuto portare con sé.
Insomma, Klara e il Sole è un romanzo con una buona idea di fondo, ma dall’esecuzione piuttosto dimenticabile .
